Since Stuart had been released from the hospital with a clean bill of health, and he had been (mostly) free of any accidents since, he and Leopold had gotten to spend quite a bit of time together. They had settled into a sort of domesticity, with Leopold doing the cooking and other chores split down the middle. The two of them walked Bart together. It was a comfortable routine for Stuart, who'd never had this kind of relationship with anyone before. Everything about Leopold just made him so easy to get along with.
He hadn't given it a second thought when he'd gone out and bought several bottles of good wine to celebrate Leopold reaching a new milestone in his efforts to catch up with modern science. Though apparently a rule had been set regarding Stuart leaving the apartment when he'd had a few... He wasn't sure when that happened.
Regardless, it felt nice to kick back on the sofa for the evening and drink with the man he'd only come to admire more and more.
It was still surreal to think that the wine in his hand was made years after the time he'd come from. But Leopold had been here in the future long enough that a part of him was starting to think of it as not the future at all, but the present. His present.
A present with Stuart, who'd purchased wine that smelled wonderful under his nose.
Leopold took his first drink of it after getting a good whiff, his fingers delicate as they curved around the glass and held it steady. The sip was small, dainty and proper, but just enough to give him a full flavour on his tongue.
It made him smile.
"For all your terrible taste in food, Stuart, you pick an excellent wine."
"1989," Stuart confirmed with a small smile. He'd done so much research to choose a good wine that was within his budget, knowing that not just any wine would be good enough for his new friend. Stuart had wanted to treat Leopold to something nice, but his own taste wasn't nearly as refined. It had taken some effort to choose something with a nice bouquet and flavor, but it was worth it to see the look of appreciation on Leopold's face.
It no longer felt like Leopold was a man from the past. To Stuart, he felt like a long lost companion he had been reunited with, and now it was the present they had to enjoy together, as well as a bright future ahead. Settling in with Leopold sharing his apartment gave him a sense of comfort and belonging that he wasn't used to. The apartment wasn't just an apartment anymore, but a home.
He tried to mimic his friend's behavior, gently swirling the wine in his glass and inhaling its pleasant fragrance before taking a small sip. Stuart admired the way Leopold was able to savor every aspect of life. So much so that he wanted to try to do the same.
"My taste in food isn't that bad," he argued, though after tasting Leopold's cooking, he knew it was true. "But I'm really glad you like the wine."
And he was. The praise gave him a feeling of confidence and pride that he also wasn't used to. No one before Leopold had really praised Stuart for anything he'd done, nor appreciated him the way Leopold did.
That is an epic open post.
